We have been talking about and working with virtualization a lot in recent months for disaster recovery purposes. Why virtualized servers for disaster recovery? In olden days - a couple of years ago - when you did backups you could easily back up only data. That is you had copies of files and application database data and emails and other data, but you did not normally backup the application software and the configuration settings for the application software and the operating systems and the hardware drivers and configuration settings for the operating system.
Over time, backup software added some of those elements, but it was and is unclear how much you had until you tried to recover the data and use it! And that is what we are talking about here - recovery. It is one thing to have the data - and when you have lost your primary copy it is a very good thing to have! However, it is another thing to have that data doing its job in the application that runs it on a server you can properly access so everyone can go to work!
This is where virtualization comes in - VMware or Hyper V virtualization basically saves a server or desktop as a file, a file that holds everything from the machine - data, all installed applications, drivers, operating system printer drivers, etc. all with a seemingly magic snap shot that can be installed on a new bare metal box and that you can work from. Now that is pretty powerful.
We have been working for some time with virtualization and disaster recovery and we are VMware Professional Level partners. If you are concerned about disaster recovery give us a call - there are new, better solutions now available.
