Managed Services -... "is the practice of transferring day-to-day related management responsibility as a strategic method for improved effective and efficient operations."[1] The services we are addressing here of course are IT / computer services for small to mid sized businesses.

Managed Services for business IT systems may not include "transferring.. management responsibility", but it is certainly a strategic step and can certainly lead to improved IT services, more effective IT services and more efficient IT services!

What is meant by the term "managed services" in regards to IT services? As with most new business process approaches, it can mean many different things, but it has some common characteristics. these include: a focus on increased use of remote, "virtual" services and 24*7 monitoring and alerts for your IT systems. In some cases, managed services is defined to include offsite location and operation of all of your IT systems.
