Microsoft Office 2007 Document Conversion!

Microsoft points out that in Office 2007 the “..new XML-based file formats make Office Word 2007 the ideal choice for building integrated document management solutions.” Note there is a big "oh boy" built-in to this feature!

Documents Must be Converted to Access Them
The new XML based documents means that all of the documents created in Office 2007 need to be converted to be read in our older, current versions of Office. You will soon need a document converter on your PC if you have not run into this already.

How To Do It
"To open Microsoft Office Word 2007 .docx or .docm files with Microsoft Office Word 2003, Word 2002, or Word 2000, you need to install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats and any necessary Office updates. By using the Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system, you can open, edit some items, and save Office Word 2007 documents in previous versions of Word.
Although you can open Office Word 2007 files in previous versions of Word, you may not be able to change some items that were created by using the new or enhanced features in Office Word 2007. For example, equations will become images that cannot be changed." [1]

Email Greeting Card Spam - "Cards" Can be Malicious

"The subject, content, and sender of the messages vary. There have been two major categories thus far. The first type of message tells the recipient they have an electronic greeting card. Both the subject and content has changed several times over the past several weeks and further changes are expected.
If the computer has out of date Microsoft software or WinZip software installed, the computer will be infected as soon as the link to the web site is clicked.
If the computer's out-of-date software cannot be exploited, the web site will offer the operator a link to "pick up their electronic greeting card", "download a program to disinfect their computer", or a similar ruse. If that link is clicked, the operator will be offered a program that, if run, will infect their computer if it is unknown to anti-virus software. Some versions are currently not detected by anti-virus software."[2]
For now, we recommend you ignore all electronic greeting card messages regardless of who it is from or the message and avoid sending them.

PDA devices, Blackberry, iPhone, Smart Phone-Heads Up!
There are some great personal productivity tools out there however, keep in mind that setting these tools up and getting integrated to your email , calendar etc. can be a tricky business! We suggest checking with your IT service provider before you buy and discussing the ins and outs of the device, how it fits in with the rest of the office and what to think about in terms of integration. At least give your IT folks a heads up on what you plan to buy, so they can work out the integration details and be ready to get you going!
