What's NEW in Vista:
Desktop Search
Powerful, integrated desktop search capabilities help you find just about anything on your computer quickly - documents, e-mails, Web sites, and even applications -without having to search for it by browsing through folders. In the Start Menu you can type a word, a phrase, a property, or any part of a file name into the embedded Instant Search box to instantly find the file that you want. Save Searches for reuse as “Search Folders”
Speech Recognition
Windows Speech Recognition lets you quickly and easily dictate documents and e-mails—even notes to yourself. Speech Recognition adapts to your speaking style and vocabulary, so the accuracy with which Windows Vista recognizes your speech improves each time you use it. Speech recognition in Windows Vista also lets you control your computer by voice - whether you're starting an application, selecting a word, or correcting a sentence.
Windows SuperFetch and ReadyBoost –Memory Utilization
SuperFetch helps manage memory to get the most out of available RAM while Windows ReadyBoost helps make PCs more responsive by using flash memory devices (like USB thumb drives) to boost performance.
Reduce Reboots, Hangs with Reboot Manager
Reboot Manager and other technical improvements make Vista extremely reliable.
Windows ReadyDrive – Hybrid Drive Utilization
ReadyDrive takes advantage of new hybrid hard disks—hard disks with integrated flash memory—to help improve battery life, performance, and reliability.
System Event Logging
Windows Vista helps make it easier for companies to comply with internal and external regulations through granular event logging, auditing and tracking for security events.
Security Enhancements
The Microsoft focus on security issues comes on strong in Vista:
• User Account Control that reduces the attack “surface area” while minimizing disruptions to user productivity.
• Enhanced online security with Windows Vista browser protected mode and anti-phishing that help protect user identity and data.
• Internet Explorer 7 - configured to run in Protected Mode, Internet Explorer 7 allows users to browse the web but restricts modifications to user files or settings. As a result, even if a malicious external site finds a potential vulnerability, the site has limited opportunities to damage your employee's PC.
• Windows Defender helps block, control, and remove spyware and other potentially unwanted software.
• Ensure wireless networks are secure with an assortment of security enhancements, including support for the latest and most secure wireless networking protocol, Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2).
•Improvements to Windows Firewall. For example, the bi-directional, application-aware filtering helps prevent distributed denial-of-service attacks.
Transparent Windows
Be more productive with the Windows "Aero" user experience, windows feature a transparent glass effect that makes it is easier to manage your open windows with less distraction.
Enhancements for Mobile Users
Mobile computing - more reliable, more secure, more productive:
•SideShow makes tools and "gadgets" available for use even when your laptop is shutdown!
•Windows Mobility Center puts battery, brightness, and presentation settings all in one place.
• Improved power management lets your mobile work force be productive longer and reduces boot-up delays when resuming from stand-by.
• Collaboration. The Windows Meeting Space technology enables you to broadcast and share documents and presentations with multiple users, making meetings more productive.
•BitLocker Drive Encryption in Windows Vista Enterprise helps protect your company data on the mobile PC, in case a laptop is lost or stolen.
