Search Engine Optimization - The Technicalities
It's widely known that search engines score web sites based on numerous variables. Using a "somewhat secret" algorithm they rank sites as to how valuable they are as a source of information for what their users wants to find, based on key word dominance and relevancy of information. Hence, when you search Google, Bing, etc. using key phrases pertinent to a topic, the results that show up, and most importantly, the order in which they show up depends on the search engine's "score" for your web site.
While the search engine algorithms used by search engines are not fully known, the main elements of how they work are understood.
Rich Content
The most basic concept is simply to provide a lot of useful, relevant content to your site users. Google attempts to measure how much and how relevant that content is relative to the search term the user entered.
Backlinks, Page Rank
Google also includes the popularity of your site measured by links from other sites to your site and especially links to your site from expert sites.
Expert sites are those that themselves have rich content about the search term used. The idea is that if your site is popular and listed by expert sites it is a site the Google user should find. Many other factors enter into your site's search engine results from the period for which it is registered to its last update date.
